TRIP DESCRIPTION
The GR20 is one of the most challenging and spectacular routes in Europe, running from north to south across the island of Corsica. This long-distance trail, also known as “Fra Li Monti” (Through the Mountains), stretches for approximately 180 kilometres, passing through some of the most impressive and varied landscapes the island has to offer.
The GR20 is famous for its technical difficulty, with rocky terrain, steep ascents and descents, and sections that require occasional climbing.
ROUTE
Day 1: CALENZANA/ASCO SHELTER
Start of the 1st Stage.
The stage from Calenzana to Asco is one of the most challenging and iconic of the GR20, taking you from the charming village of Calenzana to the Asco refuge, passing through landscapes of breathtaking beauty and terrain that will test your endurance and technical skills.
The starting point is the picturesque village of Calenzana, known for its cobbled streets and welcoming atmosphere.
Distance: 26 km | Elevation: 3200 + m / – m
Day 2: REFUGE ASCO/REFUGE OF VERGIO
The GR20 stage from Asco to Vergio via Monte Cinto is one of the most challenging and spectacular of the entire route. Monte Cinto, at 2,706 metres, is the highest peak in Corsica and offers unrivalled panoramic views. This stage combines technical climbs, steep descents and varied terrain that requires good physical condition and experience in

Day 3: REFUGE DI VERGIO/VIZZAVONA
The stage from the Vergio refuge to Vizzavona is long and varied, passing through some of the most spectacular landscapes in Corsica. Starting at the Vergio refuge (1404 metres)
Distance: 44 km | Elevation: 2800 + m / – m
Day 4: VIZZAVONA/MATALZA REFUGE
The stage from Vizzavona to the Matalza refuge is a challenging and varied traverse that takes us through dense forests, mountain peaks and alpine meadows. Starting in Vizzavona, the trail quickly ascends to the Col de Palmente (1640 metres), offering stunning panoramic views. After a short break at the Capannelle refuge (1586 metres), the trail climbs again towards the Bocca Palmente, crossing the peaceful Plateau d'Alzu. The final stretch includes an ascent and a long descent to the Matalza refuge (1410 metres), where we can rest and enjoy the wild Corsican nature.

Day 5: MATALZA/CONCA REFUGE
The final stage of the GR20 from the Matalza refuge to Conca is long and demanding, but also one of the most rewarding. From Matalza (1410 metres), the trail gently ascends through alpine scenery before reaching the Bocca di l'Usciolu (1930 metres). It then descends through valleys and across meadows to the Asinau refuge (1530 metres), a good point for a break. Continuing on, you ascend Monte Incudine (2134 metres) and descend through the Bavella forest, passing the iconic Bavella needles. The final stretch is a steady descent towards Conca (252 metres), where the GR20 officially ends, offering a sense of achievement and panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea.
