First, let's know that its name is pronounced Tubcál, and according to local popular belief, it means "one who believes in the earth" or "the earth that speaks." Interestingly, a Basque music group's name is also named after it. "Toubkal actually comes from the word Togr-akal, which means highest land. Over time, it changed to Toubkal," adds mountain guide Hassan Azdour. It is the highest peak in the Alawite country and in all of North Africa. It is located in the High Atlas and is part of the National Park to which it gives its name.
