TRIP DESCRIPTION
Get ready to crossThe Gate of Heaven«, a demanding circular high mountain crossing that will take you through the heart of the Pyrenees!
This route connects four shelters through the Alt Pirineu Natural Park (Spain) and the Parc naturel régional des Pyrénées ariégeoises (France), crossing the border between Spain and France. You will enter some of the wildest and most spectacular landscapes, passing through glacial lakes like those of Certascan and Romedo, the serenity of dense forests, the loneliness of remote valleys such as Cardós and Monestero and Broate, and the immensity of alpine passesThe highlight is the ascent to the Pica d'Estats (3,143 m), the highest peak in Catalonia. It's a physically demanding route, with technical sections and steep slopes that will test your endurance.
ROUTE
STARTING POINT IN THE MOLINASSA PARKING AT 11 AM
Day 1: VALLFERRERA REFUGE – DU PINET REFUGE
Sustained rise to the roof of Catalonia, the Pica d'Estats (3,143 m), crossing the border through the Coll de Riufred and descending to the Pinet Refuge, on the French side.
- Terrain: High mountains with steep slopes, bouldering areas and technical passes.
- Technical terrain ratio: Approximately 60%.
- Running possibilities: Limited. The ascent to Pica d'Estats and the descent to Pinet feature steep, rocky terrain that makes running difficult.
Distance: 14.5km | Elevation: 1600m+ 1250m –
Day 2: Pinet Refuge – Tavascan
A long and spectacular day that runs through lonely valleys, glacial lakes, and high mountain passes. I pass through the Etang de Montestaure, the Coll de Llurri, and descend into the Noarre Valley to Tavascan.
- Terrain: Varied, with technical sections on hills and descents, and gentler sections in valleys.
- Technical terrain ratio: Approximately 50%.
- Running Possibilities: Moderate. Some sections are suitable for running, especially in the valleys, but technical sections require caution.
Distance: 27 km | Elevation gain: 1978 m + 3086 m
Day 3: TAVASCAN- VALLFERRERA SHELTER
Return traverse to the starting point over less-traveled terrain. Ascent to the Baborte Refuge and its lake, followed by a descent through the valley to the Vallferrera Refuge.
- Terrain: Less technical, with well-defined trails and moderate slopes.
- Technical terrain ratio: Approximately 30%.
- Running possibility: High. This stage is the most suitable for running, especially on the gentle uphill and downhill sections.
