TRIP DESCRIPTION

Primitive Way from Oviedo to Santiago de Compostela in Trail Running mode

Embark on a unique adventure along the Camino Primitivo, the oldest and most challenging route of the Camino de Santiago. This 7-stage journey will take you from Oviedo, the historic capital of Asturias, to the majestic Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Along 322 kilometres, you will experience the natural beauty of the Asturian and Galician landscapes, with mountains, forests and picturesque villages.

Each stage is carefully planned, starting with a gradual climb from Oviedo to Salas, followed by days that combine demanding stretches such as the ascent to Puerto del Palo, with moments of rest in small towns full of history and culture. The journey includes significant gradients, making it an ideal physical challenge for experienced trail runners.

The journey not only offers a sporting challenge, but also a deep connection with nature and local culture, culminating in the excitement of arriving in Santiago de Compostela, a destination full of spiritual and cultural significance.

At the end of each stage, you will stay in selected hostels to offer you maximum comfort and rest, preparing you for the next day of walking. This route is a total immersion in the Camino Primitivo, designed for those seeking an authentic experience, full of effort, beauty and reward.

ROUTE

 

Stage 1: Oviedo – Salas (50 km, +850 m / -780 m)

        • Description: The start of the Camino Primitivo in Oviedo offers a route full of cultural and architectural richness. The 50 km stage is moderately demanding, with progressive climbs that take you through the classic Asturian landscapes, characterized by forests and green fields. At the end of the day, you will reach Salas, a charming town known for its medieval tower and well-preserved architecture.

Stage 2: Rooms – Pola de Allande (48 km, +920 m / -630 m)

        • Description: On this stage, the Camino enters deeper into the mountainous interior of Asturias. With a distance of 48 km, the climbs become steeper, passing through remote and picturesque rural areas. Pola de Allande is a picturesque place, ideal for a well-deserved rest after a demanding day.

Stage 3: Pola de Allande – Grandas de Salime (37 km, +1,120 m / -1,040 m)

        • Description: One of the toughest stages of the Camino, with a 37km route. The ascent to Puerto del Palo is a significant challenge, requiring effort and determination. The descent towards Grandas de Salime is rewarded with spectacular views of the reservoir. Grandas de Salime is a small village with an ethnographic museum that is worth visiting.

Stage 4: Grandas de Salime – O Cádavo (53 km, +1,080 m / -990 m)

        • Description: On this 53 km stage, the Camino crosses the border into Galicia. The landscapes begin to show the essence of Galicia with mountains and extensive forests. O Cádavo, a quiet Galician village, offers the typical hospitality of the region.

Stage 5: O Cádavo – San Romao da Retorta (51 km, +920 m / -890 m)

        • Description: This 51km stage is gentler than the previous ones, allowing you to enjoy the peaceful rural landscapes of Galicia. Along the way, pilgrims will pass through small villages and cultivated fields, immersing themselves in the serenity of the Galician environment.

Stage 6: San Romao da Retorta – Arzúa (44 km, +800 m / -850 m)

        • Description: On this 44km stage, the Camino becomes gentler as it approaches Arzúa, where it joins the French Way. It is a good time to enjoy the silence of the Galician forests and the small villages that appear along the way, offering a peaceful transition to the final stretch of the route.

Stage 7: Arzúa – Santiago de Compostela (39 km, +620 m / -710 m)

        • Description: The final stage of the Camino Primitivo, at 39km, is shorter and less demanding compared to the previous ones. As you approach Santiago de Compostela, you feel a mixture of achievement and excitement. Arrival at the Cathedral marks the high point of the pilgrimage, rewarding the effort with the satisfaction of having completed this historic path.
